As well as making you feel very ill during an attack, migraine can affect your life in many other ways.

- You may feel worried that you have got something seriously wrong with you and may even be afraid that you are going to die.

- You may worry about when the next migraine attack will happen, especially if you have something important coming up such as an exam or a special outing.

- You might stop doing things you enjoy just in case they cause a migraine

- You might feel cross if adults stop you from doing things in case you get a migraine.

- You might be afraid to try to do things (such as being in the school team or reading in assembly) just in case you let people down if you can't do it at the last minute because you have a migraine.

- You might feel guilty if you can't keep a promise to do something because you have a migraine attack.

- You might feel angry because you sometimes have migraine and your friends don't.

- You might feel angry if you miss out on something because you have a migraine.

- People may not believe you when you say you have a migraine. They might say you are trying to attract attention to yourself or trying to get out of doing something you don't like.

- People might not understand what it's like to have migraine and might call you names or get cross if you can't play or go out.

- Other people might get angry if their plans have to be changed because you have a migraine attack.

- Other children might be jealous if you get a lot of attention when you have a migraine attack.

Someone else with migraine

It can make you feel very sad to see someone that you love in pain and be unable to make them feel better. If you know someone who has migraine, these are things that you might be able to do to help them:

If it's a child:

  • encourage them to tell their parents about their migraine attacks so that they can take them to see a doctor;
  • encourage them to tell an adult as soon as they get any symptoms of migraine so that they can quickly get some treatment;
  • help them to find somewhere quiet to sit or lie down when they get an attack and try to stop other people from bothering them;
  • be understanding and don't get cross if a migraine attack stops them from playing or going out with you;
  • help them to find out what is causing their migraine attacks - click here to find out more
  • if other people make fun of someone with migraine or get cross with them when they have an attack, explain to them how ill it can make you and ask them to look at this website to find out more.

If it's an adult

  • encourage them to see their doctor - there are lots of different treatments now and he or she might be able to suggest something they haven't tried before;
  • encourage them to take their medicine or tablets as soon as they get any symptoms of migraine as they will work much better;
  • help them to find out what is causing their migraine attacks - click here to find out more
  • when they have an attack:
    • help them to find somewhere quiet to sit or lie down
    • close the curtains or turn down the lights
    • be very quiet and good.
    • do the things that they ask you to
    • don't keep bothering them to ask if they feel better
    • don't play loud music
    • don't run around and shout or play noisy games
    • politely ask other people in the house to keep quiet
    • Suggest that they contact the Migraine Action Association
      www.migraine.org.uk
  • don't get cross if you can't do something because someone else has migraine;
  • be understanding and sympathetic.
  • if other people make fun of someone with migraine or get cross with them when they have an attack, explain to them how ill it can make you and ask them to look at this website to find out more
